
Men's Tennis Defeats Birmingham-Southern 7-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- - The 29th-ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Birmingham-Southern 7-0 Saturday to open the 2007 home season. The Cards improve to 2-0 on the season, while Birmingham Southern is 0-1. U of L started the match by sweeping doubles. At the top seed, Louisville senior Slavko Radman teamed with freshman Chris Herrlinger to beat Mauricio Engler and David Ray 8-3. Freshman Ben Clos and sophomore Robert Rotaru defeated Birmingham Southern's Richard Welsh and Michael Locandro 8-6 at No. 2. Louisville sophomore Pablo Camacho and Morten Sivertsen rolled to an 8-1 win over Matt Mabry and John Crawford at the three-spot.
The Cardinals won all six singles points in straight sets. Senior Damar Johnson topped Engler 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. Freshman David Simon defeated Ray 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot. Rotaru beat Walsh 6-1, 7-5 at No. 3. Freshman Kenneth Nordheim picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mabry at No. 4. Freshman Horatiu Oltean dominated the No. 5 spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Locandro. Herrlinger defeated Freeman 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
"Our focus today was to test the depth of our team," said U of L coach Rex Ecarma. "We scrambled the doubles lineup and pulled Slavko Radman out of singles. Our experiment worked and revealed that this group is mentally ready for the second half of our doubleheader tonight. I am very pleased with the maturity and intensity these players had throughout the entire match."
Louisville will face Western Michigan at 5 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
