Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team finished out the first week of preseason practice with an exhibition game against Evansville on Sunday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals created a lot of chances but ended the 90 minute match in a scoreless tie with the Purple Aces.
"I thought it was a good first outing for us," said Cardinal head coach Ken Lolla. "I thought our defense was very sound tonight. We were able to create chances and just weren't able to finish. Overall it was a very good team effort."
The Cardinal defense was impressive with freshman transfer David Simolike starting in goal. Simolike finished the game with five saves. Senior defender and team captain Ryan Meyer sat out the game after colliding with another player in practice.
The Cardinal attack created a lot of opportunities with 15 shots in the match, including 10 in the second period. Junior Frank Jonke led the front line with five shots and one on goal while David Guzman finished with four shots and one on goal. Gerard Voutier, Ryan McDonald and Steve Sloan all finished with two shots.
Cory Elenio led Evansville with three shots on goal. The Purple Aces finished the game with 13 shots, with five on goal. Evansville's keeper Alec Dufty finished with two saves.
Louisville will be back in action next Saturday at UAB in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinals will open up the regular season on Aug. 25 as they host Memphis in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m.
