Women's Basketball Defeats Lady Stars 83-79

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated the Hoosier Lady Stars 83-79 Friday night in exhibition action at Knights Hall. Jazz Covington led the Cardinals with 26 points. Angel McCoughtry recorded a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinals. The Lady Stars were led by former Wisconsin star Robin Threatt-Elliott with 28 points.
"We're not ready to go yet," said head coach Tom Collen. "We started the season a week earlier but we didn't start practice early. All and all I think we will be okay. We were lucky to get away with a win. It was a close game and gives us a chance to work out our mistakes."
The first half remained close throughout, with six points being the largest lead. The Lady Stars took the lead early, but the Cardinals took a 14-13 lead with 13:28 left in the half off two free throw shots by Patrika Barlow. The Lady Stars tied the game with 6:08 remaining in the half, but never took the lead. The Cardinals went to the locker room with a 38-35 lead.
The Cards came out scoring in the second half, increasing the lead to 45-38 with 18:19 on two free throws by Covington. The Lady Stars came back and tied the game at 52 with 14:38 remaining. The Cardinals quickly came back and took a 56-54 off a basket by Covington with 13:20 remaining. The Lady Stars came within one point of Cards off of a basket and a free throw by Candace Dark with 1:02 remaining, but the Covington scored on a putback with 36 seconds left give the Cards a cushion. The Lady Stars kept coming back but Louisville connected on 3 of 4 from the line for the win.
The Cardinals will tip off the regular season on Friday, November 10 at 7:30 as they play host to Dayton in the Cardinal Classic at Knights Hall.
