
Men's Soccer Tames Villanova Wildcats 5-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville men's soccer team defeated Villanova 5-0 in their final home game of the season Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Park. Louisville improves to 5-9-1 (4-5-0 BIG EAST). Villanova falls to 6-8-1(2-7-0) on the season.
"It was a complete team effort," said head coach Ken Lolla. "We started slow but played very well in the second half. This win puts us in a good spot to make the conference tournament."
The game remained evenly matched throughout the first half. The Cardinals and the Wildcats tied with seven shots apiece while the Wildcats led 4-2 in corner kicks at the half. The teams entered halftime in a scoreless tie.
The Cardinals took control in the second half with a 8-4 shot advantage and a 4-3 lead in corners. Fred Braun was taken down in the box in the 45th minute, allowing David Guzman to score the first goal off a penalty kick.
In the 47th minute Frank Jonke scored in front of the goal off a cross from Ryan McDonald. In the 49th minute Guzman sent the ball past a Villanova defender to Jonke who slipped past the keeper for his second goal of the game.
Othaniel Yanez took the ball from a defender for a goal in the 66th minute of play. Bryan Kanu scored the final goal of the game in the 74th minute after he stole the ball from a defender in front of the goal area and tapped it past the goalkeeper
Louisville finished the game with a 15-11 shot advantage while Villanova held a 7-6 corner kick advantage. Cardinal goalkeeper David Simolike finished the game with six saves. Villanova goalkeepers Jason Friels and John Ward finished with a total of six saves.
Louisville will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at South Florida.
