Men's Tennis Tops Northwestern 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team opened the 2006 spring season with a 5-2 win over visiting Northwestern Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"This was a quality win for us," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Northwestern is a very competitive, top-notch program. We are happy to test our guys early and start the season with a win."

The Cardinals started the match by sweeping the doubles point as the team of Jeremy Clark and Jakob Gustafsson defeated Northwestern's Adam Schaechterle and Matt Christian Tempke 8-4 at the top seed. Damar Johnson and Jhonny Berrido beat Christian Tempke and Marc Dwyer 8-6 at No. 2 while Slavko Radman and Tony Teufel completed the sweep with an 8-6 win over Willy Lock and Juan Gomez at the three spot.

In singles action, Radman beat Lock 7-6, 6-3 at No. 2. Gustafsson topped Dwyer 6-3, 6-4 at the three-seed. Clark defeated Gomez 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 and Berrido posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexey Evstratenkov at the No. 6 slot.

Northwestern picked up two singles points from Tempke, who defeated Johnson 6-1, 7-6 at the top seed; and Christian who beat Robert Rotaru 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5. The Wildcats fall to 1-1 on the season.

"We appreciate all of our alumni attending tonight's match and giving us one of our biggest crowds at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They provided a nice atmosphere for our match and we are thankful for all they have done throughout the years to help build our program."

The Cardinals (1-0) will play host to Morehead State at 2 p.m. and Southern Illinois at 6 p.m. in a doubleheader Saturday, January 21 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
