Louisville, Ky. - Every week UofLsports.com will be catching up with the women's basketball team to find out what they are doing during the summer. The Cardinals are working hard over the summer as they prepare to enter the BIG EAST Conference this year.
What is your favorite thing about summer vacation? I enjoy summer because everything is very laid back. You can do things at your own pace and actually get to relax. Since we don't have practice on the weekends, I can go visit my sister in Indianapolis or just do nothing. Basketball is less like a job and I can play against different people.
. What was the first thing that you did when school was out? For the week that I was off I tried to sleep in late. It felt so good not to have anything to do. I was able to do whatever I wanted and that felt good not to have stress on my shoulders for awhile. Towards the end of the week I started to get bored but I just tried to continue to relax because I knew school would be starting the next week and I would have to start the grind again.
Are you playing basketball this summer? I was going to play in a league in Cincinnati but I have night classes so that didn't work out. Basically I've just been playing pick up games in the Student Activities Center or at the YMCA. I enjoy playing with different people because it makes me work on things I may not when I play with my teammates.
What does your summer workout consist of? My summer workouts consist of a lot of ball handling and shooting. Coach Eatman has basically made me start from scratch on my moves and now I am learning them with much more precision and I am getting better every week. I am trying to work on the little things that I believe will help me be a more affective player in the Big East. I also lift weights 4 days a week so I can get big like Jazz. I don't want to be pushed around like I was a couple times last year!
Are you going on vacation? I will probably just be visiting my sister in Indianapolis a lot. I do have a family reunion in Denver this year but I probably won't go. Other than that I will be staying in the Kentuckiana area. My parents live in New Albany so I'll be over there a lot trying to get some good home cooking from momma June!
Are you working a summer job? The only job that I will be doing is summer camps. They will take up a lot of my time so that's probably all that I will do besides summer school and basketball. I do plan on doing some volunteer work with refugees from Africa so that will probably take up most of my time this summer.
What is your favorite summer activity? I just enjoy not having such a hectic schedule. I like to be able to visit my friends on the weekends or just relax with my family. Of course I really enjoy sleeping in. I also enjoy being able to go to church on a regular basis because during season we have a lot of Sunday games and I am not usually able to attend.
Are you taking any classes this summer? I took Psychology 571 in May. That class was really interesting because I learned a lot about children and how to be a good parent (someday.) I got an A+. In this session I am taking Corrections and Statistics. Corrections is very interesting because we go to different prisons and see what they are like. Statistics is tough but I'll make it. Next session I am taking Spanish 3. I know that I am going to need some help because I do not know much Spanish at all. Hola!
What are your basketball goals for the summer and what do you hope to improve on for next season? My goals for the summer are to work on my individual moves and to get stronger. I want to be more of a playmaker and scorer to keep the defense honest. I want to get strong because I am little and its hard to drive in the paint against the big girls, take the contact, and finish the shot. It would be nice if I could grow a couple inches also!
If you could do anything this summer, what would you do? I would love to go Jamaica. I heard it is beautiful there and I have always wanted to go. I had a family reunion there a couple years ago but I was not able to attend. I am going to go someday whether it be with my family or husband (which might be a while).
