
Helen Johnson Inks With The Cardinals

Louisville, Ky. - Helen Johnson, a 5-10 guard from Milwaukee, Wis., has signed a national letter-of-intent to play for the Cardinals next season announced head coach Tom Collen. Johnson was named a Kodak/WBCA Junior College All-American this season. Johnson has been invited, along with current Louisville player Jazz Covington, to participate in the 2005 USA Basketball Women's National Team Trial on May 19-22 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"Helen will have the opportunity to make an immediate impact on our program," said head coach Tom Collen. "I have followed her since high school and always thought she was one of the best guards in the country. She is a true combo guard, capable of being a great shooter on the wing or a big time point guard if we need her at that position."
Johnson played for the prestigious Gulf Coast Community College where she averaged 18.9 points, six rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game this season as a sophomore. She was named the Panhandle Conference Player of the Year and the Region VIII Player of the Year. She finished her sophomore season with 1,010 career points, ranking her sixth all-time at Gulf Coast Community College. Johnson was ranked as the No. 2 Junior College Player by All Star Girls Report.
As a freshman Johnson averaged 12.1 points, five assists and 3.5 rebounds. She shot 44.9 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from the three-point line. Johnson also set a new school record during her freshman season with 11 three-pointers against Okaloosa Walton.
Johnson played at Washington High School in Milwaukee, Wis. She was ranked as the 43rd best player overall by Blue Star her senior year in high school. She was named a two-time Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Player of the Year. Johnson was also named to the first team Milwaukee Journal Sentinel All-Area team her junior and senior seasons.
