Cardinal Rowing Sweeps Murray State at Derby Festival Regatta

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team earned the title of Kentucky State Champion for the fourth consecutive year after sweeping all four races from Murray State on Saturday in front of approximately 1,000 fans at the 2005 Derby Festival Regatta on the Ohio River.
The Cards have now won all 16 races contested between the two schools in the four-year history of the event including one race in 2002, five races in 2003 and six races at last year's event.
"This was another great event for our program and I think the fans really enjoyed all of the races," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "It was a successful day for our program and we truly appreciate all of the support we got from the fans and from all of the people who helped make it possible. It was a great setting for racing and Waterfront Park is a beautiful location for the event."
Louisville won both Varsity 8+ races over the Racers on the 500-meter course with an :11-second win in Race 1 and a :12-second victory in Race 2. The Cards won both Novice 8+ races with a :07-second triumph in Race 1 and a :07.5-second margin in Race 2.
U of L also hosted a pair of Varsity 4+ intrasquad races with the Cards' Red team earning a pair of wins over the Black team by :03 seconds and :03.5 seconds respectively.
"I thought we rowed pretty well today," Ruggieri said. "With the NCAA Regionals coming up in a couple of weeks, it's important that we stay sharp and continue to improve every time we're in the water."
Up next, the Cards will compete at the NCAA Central/Southern Regional Championships on May 14-15 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
