
Cardinals Win Battle of the Bluegrass 64-55

Lexington, Ky. - The Louisville women's basketball team defeated state rival Kentucky 64-55 Wednesday evening in Rupp Arena in front of a record crowd 10,192. Three Cardinals scored in double figures with freshman Angel McCoughtry leading the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Helen Johnson scored 12 points and Patrika Barlow chipped in 10 points. Jenny Pfeiffer led the Wildcats with 19 points.
Kentucky opened up the game with a 6-0 run in the first three minutes of play. Johnson came in the game and connected on a layup to end the Cardinals' scoring drought. Yuliya Tokova hit to free throws to cut the Wildcats' lead to two. UK's Carly Ormerod hit a three-pointer to take a 9-4 lead with 14:48 remaining in the first half. Louisville then went on a 9-2 run to take a 15-11 lead with just under 10 minutes in the half. Kentucky's Jennifer Humphrey hit a layup to cut the lead to 15-13. Louisville then went on a 15-2 run to go up 31-16 with 4:19 left in the half. Kentucky finished out the half with a 7-2 run cutting the Cards' lead to 35-26 at the break.
The Cardinals kept the lead to start the second half until Kentucky made a 9-0 run, led by consecutive three-pointers by Pfeiffer to tie the game at 40 with 13:51 left to play. Louisville then went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead 48-40 with just over nine minutes remaining. UK's Pfeiffer hit another trey to cut the lead to five. The Cardinals then went on a 6-2 run to go up 54-45 with just under five minutes left to play. Another trey by Pfeiffer with 3:46 left cut the Cardinal lead to 54-50. Louisville then went on an 8-2 run to go up 64-52 with 16 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
Louisville finished the game shooting 36.4 percent from the field while holding the Cats to just 24.2 percent. Louisville held a 50-49 rebounding edge and finished the game with only seven turnovers.
The Cardinals will wrap up 2005 as they host St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday, Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
