Cardinal Rowing Wins Club 4+ at Head of the Charles

BOSTON - The University of Louisville rowing team continued its recent success at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta by defeating a field of 33 other crews to win the Club 4+ race on Saturday and earning a second-place finish in Sunday's Collegiate Doubles event.
The Cards' Club 4+ crew covered the course of approximately three miles in a time of 19 minutes, 6.038 seconds to finish more than five seconds ahead the Ottawa Rowing Club in second place with a time of 19:11.997. The Chicago Rowing Center was third at 19:12.424 and was followed by the Riverside Boat Club in fourth and the Onota Lake Rowing Association in fifth.
This marks the fifth straight year the Cards have finished fourth or better in at least one race at the Head of the Charles, the largest two-day regatta in the world drawing more than 7,000 competitors and nearly 300,000 spectators.
"This was a great showing for our team and I'm really happy for Jenna Sample and Melissa Grieshaber as the only two seniors in that boat," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "For them to earn a win the first time they compete at the Head of the Charles is a great accomplishment."
U of L's doubles crew of senior Lisa Terreberry and sophomore Kathryn Hagglund had a second-place time of 21:20.343 while UCLA won the title with a time of 20:58.134. UMass was third with a time of 21:23.729 and Texas was fourth at 21:55.847.
"Lisa and Kathryn did a great job and this is a great way for Lisa to close her career at the Head of the Charles," Ruggieri said. "Lisa's never finished any worse than third at the Head of the Charles which is something to be proud of."
The Cardinal rowing team will close the fall racing season at the Head of the Elk Regatta on Oct. 30 in Elkhart, Ind. "This was a good weekend for us," Ruggieri said. "Now, we're looking forward to finding more speed and working towards the spring season."
