The University of Louisville men's tennis team won the doubles point and all but one singles match to beat Georgia Tech 6-1 in a match played at the University of Illinois.
"I took a risk in scheduling four teams in the top 14 on the road, and four other teams that are basically a lock in the NCAA tournament all in a row," said Rex Ecarma, U of L head coach. "My hope was that this team would really develop and compete at first and start learning to win as we went on, and that is what happened today. We have lost a couple of nail bitters to elite programs, and finally we went over the hump beating a team that has been at six out of the last seven NCAA tournaments, 6-1."
The Cardinals took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Matt Mayer and Jeremy Clark battled to an 8-6 win over Scott Schnugg and Marko Rajevac at No. 1. U of L's Damar Johnson paired with Javier Herrera to beat Joao Menano and Trevor McLeod with relative ease at 8-3.
Mayer went on to win his No. 2 singles match handily at 6-2, 6-2 with the freshman Johnson pulling an upset in a three set match at No. 3.
"Matt Mayer played fine tennis today, he really lead the team. We won that match from top to bottom I really U of L head coach Rex Ecarma.
Louisville underclassmen continued their tear with sophomore Jhonny Berrido scrapping his way to an 7-6 win in the first and cruising to a 6-4 win in the second set.
Jakob Gustaffson and Jeremy Clark scored singles points for the Cards as well.
