
Red Team Wins 56-48 In Women's Basketball Scrimmage

The Red team started its first scrimmage of the season with a 10-0 run to defeat the White team 56-48 this afternoon in Cardinal Arena. Junior guard Jessica Huggins and freshman forward Yuliya Tokova led the Red team with 14 points each. Sophomore center Jazz Covington led the White team with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Four different players scored in the first four minutes of play for the Red team. Junior guard Connie Neal capped the 10-0 run off with a three-pointer from the right side of the court. The White team scored its first point at the 16:09 mark when Tatjana Kiseljova connected on one of two from the line. Neal and Huggins hit back-to-back treys to put the Red team up 16-1.
The White team struggled offensively before Kiseljova hit the team's first field goal at the 6:55 mark of the half. Freshman guard Patrika Barlow then hit a three-pointer, giving the White team consecutive baskets.
The Red team finished the first half shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the arc. The White team finished the half shooting 17.4 percent from the field and 9.1 percent from the three-point line.
After a slow start in the first half, the White team started to click offensively in the second half. Kiseljova and Covington scored back-to-back baskets to start the second half. The White team used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to get back into the game. The run was sparked by senior guard Joleen Phillips' two treys. Following the run, Phillips went on the score seven straight points and Covington capped it off with a layup to cut the lead to 48-38 with just over five minutes remaining.
Sophomore forward Missy Taylor hit a three-pointer at the 3:43 mark to push the Red team's lead to 14. Covington answered back with a trey of her own on the next possession. Phillips then hit two free throws to cut the lead to nine points with three minutes remaining. Tokova made a layup and hit one of two from the line to help secure the Red team's victory.
The White team shot 48.0 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from behind the line in the second half. The Red team finished the game shooting 42.9 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the arc. The White team finished shooting just 33.3 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from the three-point line. The White team outrebounded the Red team 32-31.
