LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team notched its third consecutive shutout of the season with a 7-0 win over visiting Southern Illinois Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cards began the match with a doubles sweep as Jhonny Berrido and Javier Herrera teamed to beat Lukasz Soswa and Bojan Ilievski 8-6 at the top seed. Jakob Gustafsson and Damar Johnson defeated Alexanderu Nomicos and Julian Angel Botero 8-3 at No. 2 while Matt Mayer and Jeremy Clark combined for an 8-1 win over Peter Bong and Tomas Gonzalez at the three-seed.

U of L swept the singles matches in straight sets as Berrido defeated Bong 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 and Damar Johnson beat Nomicos 6-3, 6-2 at the two-spot. Mayer posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ilievski at No. 3 and Gustafsson defeated Gonzalez 6-3, 6-2 at the four-seed. Clark claimed the No. 5 spot with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Soswa and Fadi Zamjaoui closed the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Botero.

"I was concerned that our team was going to look ahead to Sunday's match against Vanderbilt," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I warned them not to take tonight's match lightly, because when you lose humility, upsets happen. They responded with a shutout win. We have some very tough matches ahead of us, and our team needs to play at its highest gear to give us a fighting chance."

The Cardinals (3-0) travel to Vanderbilt to take on the third-ranked and 2003 NCAA runner-up Commodores Sunday, Jan. 25.
