NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In just his second collegiate cross country meet ever, University of Louisville freshman Wes Seacat is already running like a veteran as he defeated everyone to win the Commodore Classic Saturday in Nashville, Tenn.
Louisville finished second overall in the 15-team race with 70 points, finishing behind only Belmont University (22 points).
Seacat, who placed third and defeated a pair of All-Americans in his collegiate debut two weeks ago, finished the 8K race in 26 minutes, 26.16 seconds to capture the individual title in the 129-person race. The New Albany, Ind., native finished four seconds ahead of runner-up Isaac Lafond of Belmont.
"Wes ran very, very well," said U of L head coach Gene Weis. "He went out there and did what he had to do in order to win the race. He could have run a much better time if someone was pushing him, but he just easily won that race today. He looks tremendous and is quickly securing himself as one of the top freshman runners in the region."
Freshman Chris Davis was the Cards' No. 2 finisher with a 15th-place time of 27:18.98. Junior Curtis Persinger and sophomore Kyle Bowling placed 18th and 20th, respectively, to round out the Cardinals' top-20 finishers.
Other U of L finishers were freshman Chris Danks (24th), sophomore Tim Kaiser (34th), senior Jamie Obermeyer (36th) and freshman Todd Metzger (50th).
"I can't be disappointed with our finish, but I honestly anticipated a better overall performance by our team," said Weis. "We struggled a little bit today and some of us looked beat up. We have several guys who can run with Wes in practice, but they just need to be able to race with him at meets as well."
The Cardinals return to action September 27 when they will compete in the Greater Louisville Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park. The event is hosted by the Greater Louisville Sports Commission.
