LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team shut out Ball State 7-0 Wednesday, to close the 2003 home season with a perfect 14-0 record. Louisville celebrated senior day as all three seniors: Paulo Carvalho, Cody Conley and Harry Walsh registered straight set singles wins in their final home matches at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Louisville began the match by taking the doubles point as Harry Walsh and Matt Mayer defeated Chris Varga and Patrick Thompson 8-6 at No. 2 and Octavian Nicodim and Sebastian Aspillaga posted an 8-4 win over Brad Rhodes and Klint Knable at No. 3 Ball State's Matt Baccarani and Kevin Burnett outlasted Cody Conley and Jakob Gustafsson 9-8 at No. 1.
In singles, Conley edged Varga 7-5, 7-5 at the top seed. Carvalho defeated Baccarani 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Nicodim beat Burnett 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 at the three-seed while Mayer took the No. 4 spot with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Laramore. Jhonny Berrido topped Thompson 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Walsh posted a 6-0, 6-2 win against Paul Newman at No. 6.
"We are ecstatic about finishing with a 14-0 home record," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "It's not that we're so dominating at home, but we find different ways to win. A variety of players carry the load, which bodes well for the future. I am a little melancholy about our three seniors who have played for U of L with so much passion and pride. They all spoke during the team meeting. Harry Walsh said that playing at U of L was, by far, his best experience. Paulo Carvalho thanked everyone from the bottom of his heart for helping him survive in this country. Cody Conley closed by thanking the team for their support following the death of his father and for being there during the best four years of his life. To witness that and experience this is why I coach."
Louisville (17-4) will travel to Atlanta to play Georgia State on Sunday, April 6.
