LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Indiana State 5-2 Sunday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals improve to 16-4 on the season.
Louisville began the with a doubles sweep as Cody Conley and Jakob Gustafsson defeated Henry Choi and David O'Connell 8-4 at the top seed; Harry Walsh and Matt Mayer teamed to beat Vedron Vedovic 8-6 at No. 2 and the tandem of Octavian Nicodim and Sebastian Aspillaga posted an 8-3 win over Ionut Hurduc and Dmytro Ishtuganov at the three-spot.
In singles, Conley gutted out a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win over No. 83 Vedovic at No. 1. Nicodim defeated Lovre Brajkovic 6-3, 7-6 at the two-seed. Jhonny Berrido edged Ishtuganov7-6, 7-5 at No. 5 and Harry Walsh defeated Ivan D'Argence Areco 7-6, 6-4 at No. 6. Indiana State's Choi defeated Paulo Carvalho 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 2 and O'Connell beat Mayer 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4.
"This is a significant win for our program," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Indiana State has played in the last five NCAA tournaments and has been in the top 15 several times. Cody Conley's efforts are becoming legendary. He has won his past three matches and beaten one of the best college players in the nation in Vedron Vidovic. We are starting to build momentum to carry into the Conference USA tournament."
Louisville will play host to No. 62 Ball State on Wednesday, April 2 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
