Men's Tennis Defeats Xavier 7-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team shut out visiting Xavier 7-0 Thursday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 11-3 on the season.

The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match as the team of Cody Conley and Jakob Gustafsson edged Brad Meadows and Justin Yeager 9-8 at the top seed. Harry Walsh and Matt Mayer combined to defeat Matt Thinnes and Rob Simpson 8-3 at the two-spot and Octavian Nicodim and Sebastian Aspillaga beat Scott Triplett and Christian Lovelace 8-1 at No. 3.

Louisville swept singles in straight sets as Conley topped Thinnes 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 98 Paulo Carvalho defeated Kevin Gaughan 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2. Nicodim took the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Yeager while Matt Mayer edged Ryan Potts 7-6, 7-6 at No. 4. Jhonny Berrido claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Simpson at No. 5 and Walsh closed out the singles points with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Triplett.

"Xavier had won seven straight matches coming into today and they were a very hot team," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We are gratified to have won the match convincingly and to have posted out third straight shutout. Anytime you beat a team on a seven-match winning streak, it's a good feeling - but to shut them out is an even better feeling. This is the type of match I want from our players in the middle of our season. We're looking to keep improving." Louisville, No. 33 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, will travel to Nashville to take on No. 21 Vanderbilton Wednesday, March 19 at 2 p.m.
