Men's Tennis Tops Wisconsin 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Wisconsin 5-2 Saturday at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals are No. 31 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

The Badgers took the doubles point to begin the match as the team of Alex Kasarov and Dave Hippee defeated Louisville's No. 22 ranked team of Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim 8-6 at the top seed and blake Baratz and Alex Conti teamed to beat Jakob Gustafsson and Sebastian Aspillage 8-6 at the No. 3 seed. Louisville's Harry Walsh and Matt Mayer picked up an 8-5 doubles win over Scott Green and Jordan Raemisch at the two-spot.

In singles, Paulo Carvalho defeated Hippee 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2, Nicodim took the No. 3 spot with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Wisconsin's Baratz. Mayer defeated Green 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4. Berrido beat Ward Bortz 6-4, 6-4 at the five spot and Walsh also picked up a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Conti at No. 6. Wisconsin's Kasarov edged Conley 5-7, 7-6, 7-6 at the top seed for the Badger's only singles win.

"A win against any Big Ten team is an achievement," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "They are so good in tennis and play with so much pride that they always present a challenge. Even though we were ranked and Wisconsin wasn't, we knew it wasn't going to be easy. They are loaded with talent, but our singles players did their jobs. I especially congratulate Paulo Carvalho for clinching the fourth - and match deciding - point for us. I wish someone could have done that when we had a 3-1 lead over (then) No. 11 Kentucky last week. The Most Valuable Players for today were Matt Mayer and Harry Walsh. They won in singles and doubles and led the team from the start.

The Cardinals (7-2) will travel to Ft. Worth, Texas for the Conference USA Shootout hosted by TCU Feb. 28-March 2.
