CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of Louisville women's Varsity 8+ rowing team completed a perfect weekend after winning a tight race with the University of Cincinnati Sunday morning at Lake Harsha.
In the Varsity 8 + competition, the Cardinals led by a boat length at the 1000m mark of the 2000m race, but the Bearcats rowed tenaciously in the third 500m and took a three-seat lead. U of L came back and made a final push in the last five strokes to overcome UC by 0.2 seconds. The Cards finished with a time of 7:19.9, while the Bearcats came in at 7:20.1.
"We knew it would be a battle coming in to today's race," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "It was a great race to watch and it is something that everyone should be proud of."
The Cards' Varsity 8+ squad of Allison Kemphaus, Ashley Spence, Leslie Walters, Lucy Svehla, Carmen Noltemeyer, Stephanie George, Brooke Spence, Nikki Lee and coxswain Christy Ochsner finished the weekend with a perfect 5-0 record. U of L defeated St. Joseph's, West Virginia, Dayton and Indiana Saturday to go along with Sunday's win over Cincinnati.
In the Novice 4+ race, the Cardinals finished third with a time of 9:03.0. Cincinnati won the three-boat race with a time of 8:17.8.
The Cards return to action April 20 when they travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.
