LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The fifth-seeded University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated twelfth-seeded East Carolina 4-0 in the first round of the 2002 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Thursday.
The Cardinals took the doubles point as Matt Mayer and Brent McCombe defeated Charl Meyer and Brad Sullivan 8-0 at No. 2 and the tandem of Sebastian Aspillaga and Paulo Carvalho topped Marius Nica and Brian Cochran 8-1 at No. 3.
In singles, Carvalho defeated Paulo Baumer 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. At the No. 5 spot, Louisville's Alex Sivertsen won the first set 6-0 and was up 3-0 when East Carolina's Marius Nica retired. McCombe defeated Brett Calloway 6-0, 6-0 at the six-spot.
"Today's win was important," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We jumped into the tournament and got our feet wet. Our goal was to win decisively and we achieved that goal although we started out jittery. Matt Mayer and Brent McCombe led us in doubles, winning 8-0. Brent and Alex Sivertsen won quickly in singles and Paulo Carvalho finished it off. We are ready for Memphis tomorrow. Hopefully we'll get a lot of people out to the match and put on the best possible show we can."
Louisville will play No. 4 Memphis Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
