
Men's Tennis Upsets Memphis 4-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The fifth-seeded University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated fourth-seeded Memphis 4-1 Friday on the second day of the 2002 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship.
The Tigers grabbed the doubles point as the team of Alex Bucewicz and Michael Lahaie defeated Sebastian Aspillaga and Paulo Carvalho 8-6 at No. 3. Louisville's Matt Mayer and Brent McCombe defeated Joe Schmulian and Michael Chamberlain 8-5 at No. 2. Ben Stapp and Lee Taylor Walker clinched the doubles point, defeating Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim 8-5 at No. 1.
In singles action, Conley defeated Stapp 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 at the top seed, Carvalho defeated Schmulian 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 2, Alex Sivertsen topped Alex Bucewica 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 and Nicodim clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Richard Magney at No. 3.
Louisville will play No. 2 seeded Tulane in the semifinals Saturday at noon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Memphis will play DePaul at 3:00 p.m.
