Vanderbilt Tops Men's Tennis 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - The University of Louisivlle men's tennis team lost to No. 54 Vanderbit 5-2 Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Commodores took the doubles point as the tandem of Bobby Reynolds and Lewis Smith defeated Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim 8-5 at the top seed and Zach Dailey combined with Josh Tarkoff to beat Paulo Carvalho and Sebastian Aspillaga 8-5 at No. 3. Louisville's Matt Mayer and Brent McCombe took No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 win over Jens Frederiksen and Chad Harris.
In singles, Reynolds, ranked No. 26 in the nation in singles, defeated Conley 6-3, 6-4 at the top seed. Carvalho took Vandy's Harris to three sets before falling to 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 at No. 2. Dailey topped Nicodim 6-3, 6-4 at the three-spot and Smith closed out Vandy's singles points with a 7-6, 7-6 win over McCombe. Louisville got wins from Mayer with his 7-6, 7-6 decision over Frederiksen at No. 4 and Alex Siverten, who defeated Tarkoff 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at the five seed.
"It was close on all nine courts today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Unfortunately, we have to give credit to Vanderbilt for stepping up more than we did."
Louisville (8-15) will close out the regular season Sunday at 2:00 p.m. when the Cards play No. 30 Virginia Tech at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The 2002 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship will be held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center and Seneca Park April 18-21. Information on pairings and match times will be available Monday afternoon on www.uoflsports.com and www.c-usasports.com.
