
Women's Basketball Falls to Southern Miss 57-54

Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss' Lana Lewis hit 3 of 4 from the free throw line in the final minute to defeat the Cardinals 57-54 Friday night in Reed Green Coliseum. Senior forward LaKisha Hoffman all scorers with 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Lewis and Victoria Mason led the Golden Eagles with 12 points.
Southern Miss took its first lead of the second half with just over 10 minutes remaining with a 42-41 lead. Senior guard Kara Kessans put the Cards back on top 43-42 at the 9:27 mark.
The Golden Eagles took its biggest lead with 4:41 remaining to go up 48-54. Louisville responded with back-to-back baskets from Sara Nord and Hoffman to cut the lead to 52-54 at the 3:16 mark. Lewis hit 1 of 2 from the line with 26 seconds remaining. Marju Sober hit a jumper with seven seconds remaining to cut the lead to 55-54. Lewis hit 2 of 2 from the line to seal the win.
Southern Miss hit the first basket to go up 3-0 and then the Cards went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-3 lead in the first five minutes of action. The Golden Eagles then knotted the score at 16 with just over eight minutes remaining in the half. The score would be tied at 18 before the Cardinals took a 22-20 lead. Nord hit three consecutive baskets, two layups and a three-pointer to lift Louisville to a 31-25 halftime lead.
Louisville shot 44.1 percent from the field and held Southern Miss to just 24.2 percent shooting. The Cardinals outrebounded the Golden Eagles 29-21 in the first half. \ The Cardinals will travel to Tulane to play the Green Wave on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
