LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A total of 21 schools from six states will be represented Saturday morning as the University of Louisville hosts the Cardinal Cross Country Classic at the U of L Shelby Campus on Shelbyville Road. The women's 5000-meter race will begin at 10 a.m., while the men's 8000-meter race will start at 10:45.
Among the local schools to be competing will be Louisville, Bellarmine, Campbellsville, Centre College, Eastern Kentucky, Georgetown College, Kentucky State, Morehead State, Murray State and Southern Indiana.
The Cardinal women will be out to defend the team title they shared with the University of Kentucky at last year's event. Karen Lutes of Morehead State was the women's individual winner.
On the men's side, Kentucky's Hunter Spencer won the race as he led the Wildcats to the team title.
"This has turned into a pretty big cross country event," said U of L men's coach Gene Weis. "With 21 schools coming in, we should see some solid runners in both races. Rain or shine, these will be two exciting races to watch."
The course will encircle the U of L Shelby Campus, with the start and finish lines located near the parking lot on the west side of Burhans Hall. Parking is available on the campus and admission is free.
