Men's Tennis Tops Southern Miss in Conference USA Tournament

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Southern Miss 4-3 in the first round of the 2001 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship Friday at the Aurora Country Club in New Orleans.

The Cards began the match by clinching the doubles point at the team of Alex Sivertsen and Joachim Lien edged Konsta Finilla and Mathias Werren 9-7 at the top seed and Oliver Cantrell and Brent McCombe teamed to beat Ddavid Jansson and Ddaniel Homedes 8-5 at No. 3.

In singles, Louisville's Lien posted a 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win over Homedes at No. 2, whil Cantrell defeated Finilla 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at the four-spot. Conley picked up another singles point for the Cards with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Nicolas Carteret at No. 5 and Matt Mayer defeated Uwe Gneiting 7-5, 6-3 at the six-seed.

U of L will play top-seed South Florida Saturday at 4 p.m.
