
Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Butler 6-1 and shut out Southern Illinois 7-0 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Against Butler, the Cards clinched the singles point as Paulo Carvalho and Cody Conley teamed to defeat Aubrey Annan and Peter Voelz 8-4 at No. 2 and Oliver Cantrell and Brent McCombe combined to beat Abel Contreras and Josh Rey 8-5 at the three-spot. Butler's Jimmy Borendame and Brandon Currie notched a doubles win at the top seed with their 8-5 decision over Joachim Lien and Alex Sivertsen.
In singles action, Carvalho, Conley, Cantrell, Matt Mayer and McCombe scored straight set wins for the Cards at Nos. 2-6 respectively. Butler's Currie defeated Joachim Lien 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 for the Bulldogs' only point.
In the match against Southern Illinois, the Cards swept the doubles as Lien and Sivertsen defeated Val Epure and Peter Bong 8-1 at the top seed. Conley and Carvalho won over Alon Savidor and Chris Carpenter 8-5 at No. 2, while Jake Kirts and Ciaran Foley teamed to defeat Brian Blake and Jason Moulton 8-4 at No. 3.
Louisville also swept the singles with Lien defeating Epure 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 and Carvalho edging Savidor 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 at No. 2. Cantrell also won in a three-setter, outlasting Bong 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 at No. 3. Mayer, McCombe and Sivertsen completed the sweep with straight set wins at Nos. 4-6.
"Overall, these two decisive wins is helping to establish momentum going into the Conference USA tournament," said Louisville head coach Rex Ecarma. "We have had to reshuffle the singles and doubles lineups the past two weeks and we keep finding ways to win. A win over a ranked Georgia State team on Saturday will give us our first-ever undefeated season at home. Hopefully that will also give us momentum as we begin to defend our C-USA championship.
U of L (19-7) will close out the season on Saturday, April 14, when they host No. 59 Georgia State.
