Men's Tennis Posts Three Shutouts

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team did not lose a set as they defeated IUPUI 7-0, Dayton 7-0 and Saint Louis 7-0 Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

U of L began the day with the IUPUI match. The Cards secured the doubles point as the teams of Cody Conley and Brent McCombe, Paulo Carvalho and CIaran Foley, and Jake Kirts and Marek Blaskovic each won at Nos. 1-3 respectively. The Cards swept the singles as Joachim Lien won over Aaron Nikou 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 seed, Conley, Alex Sivertsen, Matt Mayer, Oliver Cantrell and Kirts each posted straight set wins at Nos. 2-6 respectively.

In the match against Dayton, the Cards swept the doubles as LIen combined with Tvrtko Kujundzic to post an 8-1 win over Brad Nykiel and Chris Wartmann at the top seed. McCombe and Conley teamed to beat Carl Christiansson and P.J. Miller 8-2 at No. 2 and Kirts and Blaskovic edged D.J. Gebhart 9-7 at No. 3. In singles action Lien, Carvalho, McCombe, Cantrell, Mayer and Foley won their matches in straight sets.

Against Saint Louis, Louisville again captured the doubles point as Conley and McCombe posted their third doubles win of the day, this time prevailing over Lance Vodicka and Sanjeev Paramanton 8-2 at the top seed. Cantrell and SIvertsen teamed at No. 2 to defeat Michael Hoosien and Chad Andrews 8-2 while Foley and Kirts closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win over Eric Sassier and Cory Stewart at No. 3.

In singles action, Louisville's Tvrtko Kujundzic scored a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Vodicka at No. 1 and Carvalho defeated Paramanton 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Conley claimed the No. 3 spot with his 6-0, 6-0 win over Hoosien. Sivertsen beat Andrews 6-1, 6-1 at the four spot, while McCombe defeated Eric Sasser 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Mayer closed the match with his third singles win of the day, a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Cory Stewart.

"My logic for playing three Division I teams back-to-back-to-back was to test the players' endurance and mental toughness while fighting through fatigue," said U of L head coach Ecarma. "I also wanted to give the opportunity for every player on the roster to showcase his ability. Ever player won decisively at least twice. It give me confidence that we will be strong through the conference championship and hopefully the NCAA tournament."

The Cardinals (7-2) will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to compete in the O'Charley's Invitational at the University of Tennessee. They will face 2000 NCAA runner-up No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth on Friday and the winner of No. 2 Tennessee and East Tennessee State Saturday.
