Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season with Two Shutouts

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Wright State 7-0 and Illinois State 7-0 on Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cards won the doubles point as Alex Sivertsen and Oliver Cantrell defeated Jim Grombacher 8-1 at No. 2, and Marek Blaskovic and Jake Kirts won over Mike Brush and Warren Gavin at No. 3 doubles. Wright State's Chad Derry and Quincy Jones defeated Brent McCombe and Cody Conley at the top seed.

U of L swept the Raiders in singles with Tvrtko Kujundzic, Joachim Lien, Oliver Cantrell, and Matt Mayer winning in straight sets at Nos. 1, 2, 4, and 5, 6 respectively. Louisville's Paulo Carvalho outlasted Chad Camper 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 at the No. 3 spot. The Cards' Ciaran Foley won over Mike Brush 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 6.

In the match against Illinois State, the Cards secured the doubles point as Kujundzic and Lien beat Jason Smit and Brent Steven 8-1 at the No. 2 spot and Sivertsen and Cantrell teamed up to defeat Albert Piasecki and Andy Martin 8-5 at No. 3. The Redbirds' Ricky Heath and Yew Ming Si combined to defeat Conley and McCombe 9-8 at No. 1 doubles.

Louisville swept the singles matches with Kujundzic, Lien, Conley, Carvalho winning in straight sets at Nos. 1 through 4 respectively. Sivertsen edged Piasecki in three sets at the No. 5 spot 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to secure the shutout for the Cards.

U of L (2-0) will travel to Evanston, Ill., where they will face Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 21. They return to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Feb. 3, when they will take on IUPUI, Dayton and Saint Louis in a triple-header.
