Lewis "Sonny" Bass (1940-42)

Lewis “Sonny” Bass played three seasons on the U of L football squad (1940-42), where he was a blocking back on offense and a strongside linebacker on the Cards defense, and also played two years of basketball. After a stint in the armed forces, Bass began a successful business career. He was founder of Bass and Weisberg Realty (1952-80), a marketing director and partner for 40 movie theatres (1983-87) and was co-founder of Humana in 1961
A former member of the U of L Board of Overseers, Bass has remained an active supporter for Cardinal Athletic program. He contributed $500,000 for construction of the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, a new indoor/outdoor tennis complex on the U of L campus, and funded a bronze statue of the Cardinal Bird perched at the entrance to Cardinal Arena at the U of L Student Activities Center.
