Men's Basketball Opens Exhibition Season With 90-78 Win

Louisville, Ky. - Senior Luke Whitehead recorded a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Louisville men's basketball team opened the exhibition season with a 90-78 win over EA Sports Monday night at Freedom Hall.
Whitehead connected on 9-of-17 from the field and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe to pace two other players in double figures. Sophomore Francisco Garcia added 20 points and senior Kendall Dartez chipped in with 13.
The Cardinals led, 30-20, at the 7:41 mark of the first half on a lay-up by Garcia. However, EA Sports took its first lead of the contest, going on a 14-2 run to take a 34-32 advantage. The lead for EA Sports was brief, as Garcia banged home a 3-pointer, and Whitehead added a lay-up for a 37-34 Cardinal lead.
Leading 43-38 at the half, Louisville forged ahead quickly in the second half at 50-39 with 17:02 to play on another trifecta by Garcia and two lay-ups by Dartez.
EA Sports closed to within five points at 50-45 with 16:26 remaining before the Cards used a 10-5 run to lead, 60-50. Dartez scored seven straight points and Larry O'Bannon added a 3-pointer, as the Cards went ahead, 60-50, with 14:03.
The Cardinals extended their advantage to 18 at 72-54 on a dunk by Whitehead with 9:16 left, and built their lead to as high as 22 at 86-64 on a lay-up by Nate Daniels.
The Cardinals shot just 42.2 percent from the floor, but forced 26 turnovers, which led to 31 Louisville points.
Louisville returns to action on Sunday, November 23, when the Cards host the Asheville Altitude in the final exhibition contest of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Hall.
