LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lynn Greer scored 20 of his 27 points in the second half Tuesday night as Temple rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit and beat Louisville 65-62 in the second round of the NIT.
Greer, who scored 37 points in Temple's first-round win over Fresno State last week, had just seven points on 3-for-9 shooting in the first half as the Cardinals built a 38-22 lead by the break.
Temple (17-14) started the second half with a 17-6 run, hitting six of its first eight shots.
The Cardinals (19-13) pushed the lead back to seven, but the Owls went on a 16-5 run over the next five minutes.
Greer had a 3-pointer, two layups and a turnaround jumper in the spurt. His turnaround with 3:57 left gave Temple its first lead, 59-57, since the first half.
Greer added another basket on a drive to give the Owls a four-point lead. He fell making a move on Temple's next possession, twisting his left knee. He left the game with 2:15 remaining.
Gaines made a deep 3-pointer with 1:32 left .
Greer returned with 1:10 remaining, but was noticeably limping. He didn't touch the ball on the Owls' possession, and Temple was whistled for a shot-clock violation with 48 seconds left.
Gaines gave Louisville a 62-61 lead with a layup, but David Hawkins answered with a layup with 29.9 seconds left. He was fouled and missed the ensuing shot. Ellis Myles mishandled the rebound, giving the Owls possession.
Greer returned, was fouled on the inbounds play, and swished two free throws with 27.4 seconds left.
The Cardinals had one last chance to tie the game, but Simeon Naydenov missed a 3-pointer from the corner and the buzzer sounded before Louisville could get another shot.
Gaines scored 16, and Luke Whitehead had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead Louisville, which lost for just the third time in 19 home games.
The game marked the first meeting between Louisville coach Rick Pitino and Temple's John Chaney, who have 1,044 combined victories.
