INDIANAPOLIS - Kenny Lowe scored 18 points and Darmetreis Kilgore added 14 as Purdue beat Louisville 86-84 Saturday at the Wooden Tradition.
The lead was swapped at a rapid pace for the majority of the game, as the two teams combined to take 128 shots from the floor, and the outcome wasn't decided until the last shot.
The Boilermakers (2-0) scored on eight straight possessions late in the game and built their lead to 86-79. Kilgore was whistled for a technical, which allowed Louisville (1-1) to make four straight free throws and pull to 86-83 with 1:02 left.
Louisville's Ellis Myles added two more free throws, and it was only a two-point deficit. Free-throw shooting affected the outcome - Purdue was 28-for-38; Louisville made 28 of 40.
Purdue's David Teague missed a 3-point attempt on the next possession, leaving the Cardinals one last chance with the shot clock turned off.
Luke Whitehead though, missed a baseline jumper as time expired.
Myles and Purdue's Brett Buscher had to be separated by officials after the game for yelling in each other's faces, and the Cardinals hurried off the court.
Purdue has played in all three Wooden Traditions, and is 2-1. The Boilermakers received a trophy from Wooden, who led them to the 1932 national championship.
Whitehead led Louisville with 21 points, Reece Gaines had 18 and Myles and Francisco Garcia each had 11.
Buscher had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Chris Booker scored 12 for the Boilermakers. Booker's shot at the buzzer game Purdue a 38-37 halftime lead.
Neither team had much wiggle room until Kilgore gave Purdue a 68-66 lead with 8:11 left. The Boilermakers scored on eight straight possessions and built the lead to 84-78 with 1:38 remaining.
