NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A 3-point play by Erik Brown with 39 seconds remaining in overtime and a free throw by Reece Gaines with 16 seconds left lifted Louisville to an 87-84 victory over Tulane in a Conference USA game Wednesday night.
The triumph gave Louisville (5-10 overall, 1-1 CUSA) its seventh victory in its last nine games against Tulane (7-7, 0-2). It also improved the Cardinals' record to 34-6 in their series with the Green Wave.
After seizing the 87-84 lead in overtime, a tight Louisville defense forced a timeout by Tulane, which found Linton Johnson open at the top of the key, but his 3-point attempt was off the mark at the buzzer.
Tulane led 40-35 at halftime and controlled most of the game, but Louisville's Marques Maybin scored seven straight points to tie the score at 64 with 4:48 to go in regulation.
Tulane held the lead until 1:12 remained, when Gaines banked home a three, giving Louisville its first lead of the game at 74-73. Ledaryl Billingsley knotted the game again with a free throw and, after the Wave turned away a final Louisville effort, Brandon Spann missed a 3-point goal at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Gaines, who made 10 of 18 field goal attempts, led Louisville with 28 points. Maybin and Luke Whitehead added 16 apiece for the Cardinals.
Billingsley scored 28 points and Johnson added 22 for Tulane, which also got 13 points from Spann.
