With more than 30 years of extensive experience in broadcast engineering and television production, John Leenerts brings a wealth of technical leadership and industry expertise to his role as Chief Broadcast Engineer at the University of Louisville Broadcast Center.
A proud Louisville native, Leenerts's passion for broadcasting began during his undergraduate years at Eastern Kentucky University, where he worked hands-on within the university's broadcasting operations. Following his time at EKU, he expanded his professional footprint with WTVQ, an ABC affiliate in Lexington, before returning home to Louisville to continue his career at WLKY-TV.
He later embarked on a nearly 25-year tenure at WDRB-TV (Fox 41). During his time at WDRB, his technical versatility shone as he took charge of the station's mobile satellite uplink operations, traveling nationwide to coordinate high-profile broadcasts for major networks, including ESPN, TVG, and ABC. This deep technical background makes him an invaluable asset in directing the operations of the ACCN broadcast center at UofL.
Beyond his distinguished media career, Leenert is deeply committed to public service. He is an active member of the Pewee Valley Fire Department, is the PVFD Chaplain and holds the rank of Lieutenant and serves as EMS Supervisor as a licensed Firefighter and EMT.
John and his wife reside in Louisville and are proud parents to three adult children, all of whom are University of Louisville alumni.
