Junior: Sam played an important role as a member of the freestyle relays throughout the season. He qualified to compete at the NCAA Championships as a member of the 200- and 400-free relays. At the NCAA Championships he split 43.42 on the 400-free relay that finished 10th and split 19.70 on the 200-free relay that finished 8th. Individually, he swam the 50-free in a time of 20.30. Sam was named an NCAA All-American as a member of the 200-free relay which set a new school record. At the BIG EAST Championships, he was a member of the BIG EAST champion 200- and 400-free relays that set both BIG EAST and school records. His splits on the relays were 19.27 and 43.90 respectively. The overall relay times were both good for NCAA B-cuts. Individually, Sam finished fourth in the 50-free as a part of the A-final that featured six Cards. In the 200-free he finished in sixteenth and in the 100-free he won the consolation final with a time of 44.25. His times in the 50- and 100-free were both good for NCAA B-cuts. Hoekstra was named a two-time All-BIG EAST performer. During the season, he was part of the winning 200-free relay in the victory against No. 11 Indiana.
Freshman (At Michigan) Sam made NCAA Championships, helping the 200-yard freestyle relay to a 12th-place finish, and also placed 45th in the 50-yard freestyle (20.19) at NCAAs. He helped the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a third-place finish (1:18.54) at the Big Ten Championships and finished 10th in the 50-yard freestyle (20.19) and 19th in the 100-yard freestyle (45.39 finals, 44.81 prelims).
Prep: Sam competed for Grandville High School, where he was a four-year varsity letterwinner and set the 100-free record en route to D-1 Michigan Swimmer of the Year honors. A 13-time All-America selection, he was a four-time all-conference and all-state selection. He also played four years of water polo, two years of baseball and one year of track and field. Hoekstra was a three-time all-state performer and two-time All-American in water polo as a goalie. Personal: He is the son of Allen and Yvonne Hoekstra. Born Oct. 28, 1990.
