Sophomore: Brett is very versatile, swimming the individual medley events, along with some butterfly races. Throughout the regular season, he had a best time in the 200-IM versus Kentucky, going 1:55.27, but had his best 400-IM and 200-fly times at the Michigan Invite. He went 3:56.15 and 1:50.63, respectively. At The American Championships as an exhibition swimmer, Brett topped all of those times. He went 1:50.60 in the 200-IM, a B-cut 3:51.81 in the 400-IM, and 1:47.32 in the 200-fly.

Freshman: As a freshman, Mackenzie added depth in the mid- distance stroke events. He competed in his first BIG EAST Championships and placed 5th in the 200-butterfly in a time of 1:50.28. He also swam the 200-backstroke the same day and placed 11th with a time of 1:48.50. At the Purdue Invite, Brett swam the 400-IM placing his highest in the meet at 5th in 3:56.57. Mackenzie placed 8th in the 200-backstroke and butterfly in 1:50.93 and 1:51.56 respectively. His fourth event at the Purdue Invite was the 200-IM with a time of 1:51.49 for 11th place. Mackenzie represented the Cardinals in the summer Charlotte UltraSwim in May and had a highest finish of 38th in 2:11.16 in the 200-meter butterfly. He also swam the 200- and 400-meter IM in 2:15.83 and 4:48.64.

Prep: Brett MacKenzie comes to Louisville from Tipp City, Ohio and the Dayton Raiders Swim Club where he swam for Gary Galbreath and Kevin Weldon. Born in South Africa, Brett and his family moved to the United States in 2001 when he was seven, and he now holds dual USA/South African citizenship. Swimming for Tippecanoe High school, MacKenzie is a multiple time High School All-American, and three-time Ohio Junior National Champion. He also owns a US Olympic Trial qualifying time in the 400- Individual Medley. He placed fifth in the 400-IM at the Junior Nationals held in Texas in 2011. He was a top three finisher in multiple events all four years in high school.
