Louisville finished 35th in the nation in the final Learfield Sports Director’s Cup national all-sports standings. It is the ninth consecutive season the Cardinals finished in the top-40. The Cardinals were one of nine ACC universities among the top-50.

Thirteen programs were ranked among the nation’s top-25 teams at one point during the 2018-19 season including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, rowing, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming, women’s indoor track & field, and volleyball.

Sixteen UofL teams or individuals from teams – seven men’s and nine women’s – participated in post-season competition including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men's and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women's soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, and volleyball.

UofL student-athletes amassed over 9,800 service hours through its CardsCARE community outreach program during the 2018-19 year, a total which ranked seventh in the nation in the NCAA Team Works Helper Community Service Challenge. UofL was third in the nation in the 2018 fall challenge. The Cardinals have ranked in the top-10 in service hours for five consecutive years.

Cardinal athletic teams posted a collective 3.254 GPA during the 2018-19 academic year, with 22 of 23 teams achieving a 3.0 or better for the year. A total of 376 student-athletes, managers, trainers and spirit group members were 2018 Red and Black Scholars for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better.

Three teams – women’s basketball, women’s cross country, and women’s golf – received public recognition through the NCAA Academic Performance Program for ranking in the top-10 percent in the 2013-17 most recent APR, which measures academic eligibility, retention, and graduation for student-athletes. Fourteen UofL programs produced perfect APR scores for the most recent single-year figures.

UofL’s baseball team finished a program-best third in the nation after advancing to the NCAA College World Series for the fourth time in the last seven years. The Cardinals’ 51-18 record was tied for the second-most victories in program history. The team captured their fourth ACC Atlantic Division title in the last five seasons.

Women’s All-America swimmer Mallory Comerford captured NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200 free to lead the women’s swimming and diving team to a fourth-place team finish, the highest in school history. The men’s program earned a fifth place NCAA finish in the championship, achieving the best finish in school history. The Cardinals have produced an individual national champion in eight straight seasons.

UofL’s women’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA regional championship game while posting a 32-4 record. The team won their second straight ACC regular season title.

Men’s soccer won their first ACC Tournament championship. The team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship for the fifth time in the last eight seasons, producing a 13-2-5 record.

Men’s golf advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second straight year.

Volleyball made their 27th NCAA Appearance after finishing the regular season with a 22-9 record.

Women's soccer earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013, making their fifth appearance overall.

Twelve student-athletes were drafted by their respective professional leagues. Eight by Major League Baseball, three by the Women's National Basketball Association, and one by Major League Soccer.

Season Summaries

Baseball

Finished 51-18, the second-most victories in program history and sixth 50-win season. The Cardinals won their fourth ACC Atlantic Division title in the last five seasons and was the top overall seed in the ACC Championship.

UofL was the No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Championship. They won the NCAA Louisville Regional and NCAA Louisville Super Regional to punch its ticket to Omaha for the fifth time in program history. The Cardinals won a pair of games and were one of the final four teams remaining at the NCAA College World Series, the deepest postseason run in program history.

Reid Detmers was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year, and five others earned All-ACC honors. Detmers earned numerous All-American honors, while Alex Binelas was named a Freshman All-American by several publications as well. The Cardinals had eight players taken in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Men's Basketball

Under first-year head coach Chris Mack, the Cardinals compiled a 20-14 record while facing the nation’s fourth-toughest schedule. Picked to finish 11th in the ACC, UofL achieved a 10-8 conference record and earned a tie for sixth in the final regular season standings.

The Cardinals beat four Associated Press Top 25 teams and were No. 22 in the nation in the NCAA’s NET rankings. Louisville made its 39th NCAA Tournament appearance.

Jordan Nwora was honored as the ACC Most Improved Player and earned All-ACC Third Team honors. Nwora was also named to the USBWA All-District IV Team and the NABC All-District 2 Second Team.

Women's Basketball

The Cardinals produced a second consecutive 30-win season with a 32-4 record, winning their second straight ACC regular season title. The team entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed for the second straight year and advanced to the Elite Eight for the fifth time in program history.

Louisville’s 78-69 win over No. 2 UConn in front of 17,023 fans at the KFC Yum! Center marked their first win over the Huskies since 1993 and helped them move up to No. 2 in the Associated Press and USA Today polls. Arica Carter, Asia Durr and Sam Fuehring will go down as the most accomplished senior class in program history, leading the Cards to a combined 68-7 record the last two seasons.

Durr was named ACC Player of the Year for the second straight season and is the first player in program history to earn conference player of the year honors multiple times. She was also named ACC Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year, Ann Meyers Drysdale Award winner and Dawn Staley Award Winner, along with being named WBCA, Wooden Award, AP, espnW, USBWA, Senior CLASS Award All-American.

Men's Cross Country

The Cardinals finished in 10th place at the ACC Championship. They would follow that up with a ninth place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional. The team was recognized by USTFCCCA with All-Academic honors.

At the ACC Championship, freshman Emmanuel Cheboson earned All-ACC honors as he placed 15th with a time of 24:05.9. He also led the Cards with a ninth place finish at the Southeast Regional, earning All-Region honors after turning in the race's second-best freshman time.

Women's Cross Country

The team placed 11th at the NCAA Southeast Regional with 353 points, following a 14th place finish at the ACC Championship. As a team, the Cardinals received USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

Dorcas Wasike became the cross country team's first ACC champion at the Championships in Franklin Park. She also become the first Cardinal to win an NCAA Regional Championship. Wasike earned All-America honors for the second-consecutive season by placing 14th at the NCAA Championships.
Wasike was named the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year in addition to being named USTFCCCA Regional Athlete of the Year, and ACC Runner of the Year.

Field Hockey

Finished the season with a 13-6 record. The Cards stood at No. 14 in the NFHCA rankings released on November 7, marking the 65th straight week Louisville has appeared in the top-20 rankings dating back to the 2013 season.

Louisville’s 1-0 win over then-No. 11 Northwestern on Sept. 16 marked head coach Justine Sowry’s 100th win at UofL.

UofL tied a program record with three 2018 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-America selections. Ayeisha McFerran was named to the first team, while Mercedes Pastor and Taylor Stone were named to the second and third team. McFerran was the only four-time All-America selection on the list, while becoming the first player in program history to earn All-America honors four times.

Football

The Cardinals played four ranked opponents, including No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson. It marked the most games versus a ranked foe since facing four during the 2006 campaign.

Quarterback Malik Cunningham led the team in rushing with 497 yards and five touchdowns, the fourth-straight year a quarterback led the team in rushing.

Freshman Hassan Hall led the Cardinals with 818 kickoff return yards, the sixth-highest total in school history. He returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown versus Clemson.

Jaylen Smith closed his career by leading the Cardinals in receiving with 36 catches for 550 yards and one touchdown.

Men's Golf

The team advanced to the NCAA Championship for the fourth time in school history, finishing 29th overall. The Cardinals, who hosted the NCAA Regional for the first time, placed fourth overall in their 11th regional appearance.

The Cardinals won the Old Town Club Invitational at Wake Forest by firing a 30-under-par as a team. Matthias Schmid won his first career event by shooting a school record 192 over the three rounds. Simon Zach won a pair of events during the season, winning the Bank of Tennessee and the Bash at the Beach.

Schmid set the single-season stroke average at UofL by carding a 70.55. He was named to the All-ACC First Team, along with being an All-Region and Second Team All-American selection.

Women's Golf

The Cardinals earned their best ACC Championship finish in program history, taking fifth. The Cards advanced to the NCAA East Lansing Regional, making their sixth consecutive regional, the longest streak in program history.

During the regular season, UofL won the Alexa Stirling Intercollegiate, as well as finishing runner-up at the Moon Golf Invitational. Louisville defeated its rival Kentucky at the Battle of the Bluegrass State for the second straight season.

Lauren Hartlage earned multiple postseason accolades after leading the Cardinals with a 72.60 stroke average, which ranks third all-time in program history. She was named to the All-ACC Team, the All-ACC Academic Team, was a WGCA All-American Scholar, and was a Golfweek All-American Honorable Mention. She finished the year ranked 49th in the Golfstat NCAA Division I player rankings and 61st in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Lacrosse

Tessa Chad, the team’s lone senior, was named Second Team All-ACC, IWLCA All-Region Second Team and an IWLCA Senior All-Star after leading the team and ranking eighth in the ACC and 28th in the nation with 56 goals. Her 56 goals rank 10th all-time in a single season in UofL history.

She averaged 3.11 goals per game, which ranked seventh in the ACC and 35th in the nation. Her 25 free position goals led the ACC and rank second all-time in UofL single season history, while her 1.39 free position goals per game led the ACC and ranked eighth in the nation.

Chad was joined by Maddie Birch, Caroline Blalock, Ally Hall and Alex McNicholas on the ACC All-Academic Team.

Rowing

Finished sixth at the ACC Rowing Championship with 41 points. All three 8+ boats advanced to the Grand Finals. The Varsity 8+ and Third Varsity 8+ each finished in fifth place, with the Second Varsity 8+ finishing sixth.

The team earned a pair of gold medals at the Head of the Hooch Regatta. The Varsity 8+ crew took home the gold in the championship eight race, while the Varsity 4+ also bought home the title in the championship four event.

Violette Legrand was named to the All-ACC Second Team for the second straight year. The Cards tied a program record with 10 student-athletes named to the All-ACC Academic Rowing Team.

Men's Soccer

Louisville registered its first ACC Championship title in 2018 before ending the season with an 11-5-3 record overall. The Cardinals, which defeated Notre Dame, Wake Forest and North Carolina in a span of eight days to win the ACC championship, closed the season ranked 16th in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25.

The Cards earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a bye to the second round. It was the third straight season, and the 11th time in the last 12 years, they advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Tate Schmitt was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI Second Team and was among three All-ACC honorees for UofL. Adam Wilson was selected 39th overall by Toronto FC in the second round of the 2019 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, while Schmitt signed an MLS homegrown contract with Real Salt Lake.

Women's Soccer

Finished the season with a 12-7 record and tied for fifth in the ACC with a record of 6-4. The Cardinals earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament, making their fifth appearance overall.

The team jumped into the United Soccer Coaches poll the week of Sept. 4 at the No. 24 spot. Louisville earned the ranking after a 10-3 start, marking the second best start in school history. It was the first time they earned a national ranking since 2016.

Emina Ekic was named to the All-ACC first team after an impressive sophomore campaign where she was also named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List. Ekic was named a second team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches association and was named a first team All-Region selection.

Softball

Posted a 35-23 overall record and a 12-12 mark in ACC play. The Cardinals have won 30 or more games in 16 consecutive seasons. As a team, Louisville registered a program-record 106 stolen bases.

The Cardinals earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, marking the 14th NCAA postseason appearance in program history. They were the No. 2 seed in the Evanston Regional and posted a 2-2 record while reaching the regional final for the sixth time in school history.

Megan Hensley was named to the NFCA All-Southeast first team. Celene Funke led the nation in triples with 13. Funke was also named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team, becoming the first in program history.

Men's Swimming & Diving

History was made at the NCAA Championship as the Cardinals captured a program-record fifth place finish. The Cardinals' 212 points were also the most scored by a Louisville team at an NCAA Championship. The Cards became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish in the top five at NCAAs in a single season.

As a team, Louisville finished second at the ACC Championship for the fifth straight year. They concluded the dual meet season with a record of 5-4 with wins over Xavier, Tennessee, Virginia, Northwestern, and Missouri. Louisville was tabbed at No. 8 in the final CSCAA/TYR Poll.

The Cardinals won five individual titles at the ACC Championship. Nicolas Albiero (200 fly) and Evgenii Somov (100 breast) won their second consecutive ACC championship, while freshman Bartosz Piszczorowicz won the 200 free crown. The Cards’ 800 free and 400 free relays also took home the gold.

Women's Swimming & Diving

The Cardinals finished in fourth place at the NCAA Championship, the highest finish in program history. The Cards earned the program's first-ever team trophy, securing fourth with 235 points. Louisville became the first ACC program in history to have both its men's and women's teams finish in the top five at NCAAs in a single season.

Arthur Albiero earned his second straight ACC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year honors.

Mallory Comerford collected her third consecutive ACC Women's Swimmer of the Year honor after winning two titles at the NCAA Championship and three ACC Championship gold medals. With the award, Comerford became the first women's swimmer in ACC history to receive the distinction three times throughout her career.

Men's Tennis

Finished the season with a 16-13 overall record, including a win over Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament. The team swept then-No. 22 Miami on March 29, 4-0.

Head coach Rex Ecarma recently completed his 29th season as head coach, amassing a 474-316-1 record. He is one of 18 active coaches with 400 or more career wins.

Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff was named to the All-ACC Third Team, becoming the program’s first three-time All-ACC selection. He along with Brandon Lancaster, were nationally ranked singles players, with Morin-Koughoucheff reaching as high as No. 36 and Lancaster standing at No. 104. The two seniors also teamed for a doubles ranking of No. 53. The duo of Lancaster and senior George Hedley appeared at No. 34.

Women's Tennis

UofL finished the season with a 10-15 record and was ranked 49th in the ITA national rankings.

The Cardinals played nine nationally ranked teams including No. 1 UNC and No. 2 Duke.

Raven Neely had a singles record of 16-6 and was 10-12 in doubles.

Indoor Track & Field

Three records were broken during the Indoor season.

Five Cardinals earned first team honors at the ACC Indoor Championships, while 10 athletes earned second team honors. Two went on to win event titles at the ACC Indoor Championships: Alivia Ash (high jump) and Wasike (3,000m).

Two Cardinals earned Indoor All-American honors in Makenli Forrest and Dorcas Wasike.

Outdoor Track & Field

Six records were broken during the outdoor season. Six Cardinals earned first team honors at the ACC Outdoor Championships while six athletes earned second team honors.

Makenli Forrest, Martice Moore and Albert Kosgei earned outdoor All-American honors.

Moore was the lone ACC Champion at the Outdoor Championships, winning the 110m hurdles.

Volleyball

The Cardinals made their 27th NCAA Appearance in 2018. UofL, one of five ACC teams in the 64 team field, finished the season at 22-9 overall and 14-4 in the ACC. The Cards defeated Dayton in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Louisville was led by setter Wilma Rivera, the 2017 and 2018 ACC Setter of the Year, who triggered the offensive firepower of junior Melanie McHenry, who led the Cards in kills and middle blocker Jasmine Bennett, who was among the nation's leaders in hitting percentage.

Molly Sauer, a two-time ACC defensive player of the year anchored the defense and was ranked No. 15 in the nation amongst active players in career digs.
