LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville Athletics Department announced the launch of the 1909 Society, a new leadership giving community designed to provide comprehensive, department-wide support for Louisville's 23 varsity programs and more than 650 student-athletes.
The 1909 Society represents a modern, strategic approach to philanthropy—aligned with the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics—ensuring Louisville is positioned to compete, grow, and lead at the highest level.
"The 1909 Society is about investing in people and building a sustainable foundation for the future of Louisville Athletics," said Josh Heird, Vice President and Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes are competing in a more dynamic and demanding environment than ever before. This initiative allows us to provide the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed—in competition, in the classroom, and in life."
Through multi-year commitments, members of the 1909 Society will support critical areas across the department, including scholarships, academic services, mental health and wellness, nutrition and performance, career development, facilities, and recruiting and retention initiatives—including revenue-sharing opportunities.
Membership is established through a commitment of $25,000 or more pledged over five years, with flexible giving options through the Cardinal Impact Fund and the Champions Fund, both designed to maximize department-wide impact and enhance Louisville's competitive position nationally.
The launch of the 1909 Society reflects Louisville Athletics' commitment to long-term stability, strategic investment, and a comprehensive student-athlete experience that extends beyond the field of play.
"Our goal is simple," Heird added. "To ensure every student-athlete who chooses Louisville has the opportunity to thrive—and that our programs have the foundation to compete for championships for years to come."
