UofL Red & Black Scholar Rewards Program To Provide Educational Awards for Student-Athletes
May 25, 2022 | General, Academic Services
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Louisville Athletics will provide financial awards to student-athletes in the 2022-23 academic year for education related benefits under its new Red & Black Scholar Rewards program, announced Tuesday by Interim Director of Athletics Josh Heird.
Â
Heird led a group of athletics staff who recently finalized a distribution plan for the academic achievement awards that will begin in the fall of 2022.
Â
Student-athletes will be eligible to receive up to $5,980 each -- the maximum allowable reward under NCAA legislation -- to be split between the fall and spring semesters. Individual awards will be based upon retention and eligibility, full-time enrollment status, completion of life skills components; remain in good standing with University Student Code of Conduct and Athletic Department Student-Athlete Code of Conduct; and have active roster status for their respective sports. As much as half of the amount (up to $2,990) would be awarded to eligible individuals in March 2023 for the previous fall semester, with the balance provided in October 2023 for the previous spring semester.Â
Â
UofL Athletics is prepared to fund an amount equal to the allowable NCAA scholarship limits for its 23 sports programs, a total of 294.1 scholarships that include some sport equivalency scholarships.
Â
About $1.75 million has been identified through operating funds to come for the Red & Black Scholar Rewards program, which was made possible by an academic performance rewards program that became part of NCAA legislation in 2020 and stems from a Supreme Court decision in the Alston v. NCAA case. A student-athlete could earn $23,920 over a four-year career, funds that previously was not permissible.
Â
UofL's Educational Benefits Committee will meet during the 2023 spring semester to review the program after soliciting feedback and assessing any appropriate revisions that may be determined after this initial year.
Â
A broader fund-raising campaign encompassing academic initiatives will be rolled out later this summer. Additional information may be obtained by calling the Cardinal Athletic Fund at (502) 852-5735.
