Matt Wernecke led Vandergrift High School to 11 state championship appearances.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's golf head coach Ryan Blagg announced the hiring of Matt Wernecke as the program's assistant coach on Wednesday.
Wernecke joins the Cardinals after spending 11 seasons as the head coach of the boys' and girls' golf programs at Vandergrift High School in Austin, Texas.
"We are excited about the addition of Matt Wernecke to our program," Blagg said. "He is going to be a great fit for our guys, and he will help us continue to grow our program in the right direction."
Â
In his 11 seasons heading both programs, Wernecke was one of the most successful coaches in the state of Texas. He guided his teams to 11 state championship appearances, winning three consecutive state championships in 2014-16, and being named the 2016 State Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School coaches.
Â
His boys' teams also posted state runners-up finishes during the 2018 and 2019 campaigns, while also placing third in 2013 and 2016.
Â
Collectively, his teams won 23 team championships and recorded 25 individual champions, while sending 18 players on to play collegiate golf.
Â
As the leader of the girls program, he guided his teams to five appearances in the state championships, earning runners-up honors in 2016 and a third-place finish in 2015.
During his tenure coaching the girls, his teams won 24 team titles, recorded six individual champions and had 11 players continue their careers in collegiate golf.
"I would like to thank Coach Blagg and the University of Louisville athletic department for the opportunity to join the Cardinal family," Wernecke said. "The men's golf program has a rich history of success and I look forward to helping continue that tradition on and off the course."
Â
As a player, Wernecke was a four-year letterwinner at Sam Houston State men's golf team, where graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology in 2001.
Â
A native of Austin, Texas, Wernecke is married the former Amy Willis and the couple has three daughters: Avery, Masyn, and Evy.
