Cards lose doubles point, but rally for first road win
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.  – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Purdue 4-2 to move to 3-0 on the season Saturday afternoon at Purdue's Basham Courts.
Â
"To win on the road against a talented Big 10 team that made the NCAA Tournament last year is a good accomplishment," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "They are well coached and will get better and better this season. We did it the hard way when we lost the doubles point. Purdue played very well. But our depth saved the day.
Â
The Boilermakers won the doubles point to take an early lead in the match. Louisville gained the initial advantage at No. 3 when senior Nicolas Rouanet and junior Federico Gomez topped Renan Hanayama and Dominik Sochureck 6-3. Purdue countered at the two-spot as Stephan Koenigsfest and Javier Rodriguez defeated juniors George Hedley and Brandon Lancaster 6-3. The first point of the match came down to court one where Athell Bennett and Gergely Madarasz upset Louisville's sixth-ranked pair junior Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and sophomore Parker Wynn 6-4.
Â
In singles action Wynn, No. 115 in the ITA singles rankings, evened the score with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Javier Rodriguez at No. 2. The Boilermakers countered with Madarasz's 6-4, 6-3 win against No. 75 Morin-Kougoucheff to bring the score to 2-1.
Â
The Cardinals would not lose another set for the remainder of the match. Rouanet beat Koenigsfest 6-1, 6-3 to knot the score at 2-2 and Ciro Lampasas posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sochureck to put Louisville ahead 3-2. For the second time in three matches, Gomez provided the clinching point when he defeated Athell Bennett 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
Â
Â
"Parker started off with a win against their star freshman and Nicolas beat last year's regional Freshman of the Year solidly to get our second point," said Ecarma. "Ciro came through with a smart win to give us the third and Fede did what he has been doing this weekend by clinching another win for us. Fede has made a big impact in our lineup. Brandon was up a set and 6-5 to give us an insurance point but the match was suspended after Fede's win. Winning very tough road matches is part of the evolution of this team. As long as they listen closely and limit unforced errors they can be successful again."

Louisville will return to action on Jan. 26 when the Cardinals travel to Ft. Worth, Texas to take on Duke in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend
