Freshman Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff picked up a singles win, but Cards fall 4-1 to fifth-seeded Georgia Tech
CARY, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 30 Georgia Tech in the second round of the ACC Championship on Thursday at Cary Tennis Park.
Â
The 12th-seeded Cardinals (15-17) battled through a hard-fought match, but fell short 4-1 to fifth-seeded Georgia Tech (16-7) to end the 2016 season.
Â
"That hurt," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We were in this match the entire time until the very end. Christopher beat a player he lost to in the regular season. Jeff (Brown) was way up in his match as well. Sean, Alex and George all had chances to win their first sets. We needed at least one of those to make it come down to the wire. But I want to take this time to thank seniors Alex Gornet and Jeff Brown for their four years of dedication to the program and me. I will miss them."
Â
The Yellow Jackets took an early lead with doubles wins on courts one and three. At the No. 1 spot, senior Alex Gornet and freshman George Hedley fell 6-4 to No. 33 Michael Kay and Casey Kay. The point secured at the No. 3 position where junior Sean Donohue and sophomore Courtney Lock fell 6-2 to Nathan Rakitt and Andrew Li.
Â
In singles, Georgia Tech added to its lead when Daniel Yun defeated freshman Brandon Lancaster 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. The Cardinals answered on court three where freshman Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff upset No. 112 Carlos Benito 6-4, 6-4 to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
The Jackets gained another singles point at the No. 1 spot as Christopher Eubanks, who stands seventh in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, defeated Gornet 7-6, 6-2. The match was decided on court five where Rakitt picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hedley for the 4-1 final.
Â
In the unfinished matches, Brown defeated Fiegel 7-6 in the first set and was up 4-3 Â in the second at and Donohue lost his first set 7-5 to Michael Kay and was trailing 3-2 in the second when the match ended.
