Cards win first match of Friday doubleheader
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Butler 6-1 on Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"Butler is a really good team and I took a really big risk by sitting out two of our best guys, Alex Gornet and Courtney Lock." said head coach Rex Ecarma. "Five true freshmen and a guy coming off an injury really came through for a decisive win. I'm really happy and proud of them. It shows the depth of our team. We really needed a win desperately and we beat a legit team today."
The Cards (4-5) opened the match by taking the doubles point. Sophomore Courtney Lock and junior Sean Donohue teamed up to defeat Spencer Lang and Adrian Mag 6-1 on court three with freshmen Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and George Hedley secured the doubles point as they defeated Mikheil Khmiadashvil and Mason Dragos 6-3 on court two.
In singles action, Hedley put the Cards ahead 2-0 when he claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles against Lang. Freshman Brandon Lancaster defeated Woldmoe 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to push the Cards lead to 3-0. Freshman Michael Quang clinched the win with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Mag on court 6. Brown added a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. Butler picked up a victory at No. 2 with Dragos defeating Longhi Neto 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9). Morin-Kougoucheff finished the match by outlasting Khmiadashvil 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 1.
