Cards finish their opening weekend with a 3-1 record

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Morehead State 4-0 Sunday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

"I felt like our players, though inexperienced, handled it in a mature way," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "We came out fired up and focused. The guys were really determined. Sometimes in the fourth match in one weekend, there is a let-up, but there was no let-up on this team.

The Cards opened the match by taking the doubles point. Sophomore Courtney Lock and freshman George Hedley teamed to beat Sabastian Penaloza and Nick Mercer 6-2 on court three while freshmen Christian Haushammer and Brandon Lancaster secured the point with a 6-3 decision against Ognjen Sunjevaric and Enrique Samudio at No. 2.

In singles action, the Cardinals picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 1, 5 and 6. Lock gave Louisville a 2-0 lead when he defeated Ognjen Sunjevaric 6-0, 6-0 at the five-spot. On court six, Haushammer's 6-3, 6-3 win over Samudio made the score 3-0. Gornet clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ruiz at No. 1.

"One guy that has really impressed me has been Courtney Lock," said Ecarma. "He has really become an anchor this weekend for us in singles and doubles. He and George (Hedley) really have been our most important doubles team. They have really led the way in doubles points."

The Cardinals (3-1) return to action next weekend when they travel to Athens, Ga., to face Memphis in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Tournament.
