Sebastian Stiefelmeyer reflects on senior day
Rex Ecarma on the 5-2 loss to Duke
The No. 30 University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 8 Duke on Friday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Duke improves to 21-4 and 8-3 in ACC play, while the Cards drop to 23-7 and 7-5 in the ACC.
Before the start of the match, Louisville held a ceremony to honor its six seniors: Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, Van Damrongsri, Luis Elizondo, Michael Lippens, Chris Simich and Albert Wagner.
"I think that our singles were really good with Albert (Wagner) and Sebastian (Stiefelmeyer) winning and Luis (Elizondo) was a tie-breaker in the third," said UofL head coach Rex Ecarma. "As a coach, the magic number is four, so you're always trying to figure out where can I get four points. That could have potentially been three, No. 3 doubles was up 6-3, we were so close to being there. But I've got to give it to Duke, they won some big, big matches."
The Blue Devils took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. No. 14-ranked Raphael Hemmeler and Nicolas Alvarez defeated No. 72 Alex Gornet and Jeffrey Brown 8-4. Jason Tahir and Josh Levine then defeated Albert Wagner and Van Damrongsri 8-6 to clinch the point for Duke.
In singles play, No. 51 Tahir defeated Gornet 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. No. 100 Wagner then defeated No. 59 Hemmeler 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 to earn his 100th career singles win and make the score 2-1.
Duke extended its lead to 3-1 when Bruno Semenzato defeated Chris Simich 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. The match was decided on court five where Chris Mengel defeated Michael Lippens 6-4, 6-4.
Sebastian Stiefelmeyer, No. 7 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated No. 11 Alvarez 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 1 after being down 4-1 in the third set. With his win Stiefelmeyer set a program record for singles wins in a season with 39.
TJ Pura defeated Luis Elizondo 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) to make the final score 5-2.
The Cards return to action next Friday, April 24 when they travel to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Championships.
