The University of Louisville Spirit Groups continued their winning tradition with four championships and were runners up in two other categories at the National Cheer and Dance Nationals which were held in Daytona Beach Florida, April 10-12th.
Louisville won a National Championship in Division 1A Small Coed, Division 1A All-Girl, Division 1A Hip-Hop & Partner Stunt with cheerleaders Calli Cantu and Nic Laracuente being the winning Cardinal partners.
"I am incredibly thrilled for our kids to see them rewarded at the highest level for all of their hard work." said U of L Spirit Coordinator Todd Sharp. "After so much success people always ask if I am jaded to winning national championships. But the truth is each one still means as much as the very first. Every year is completely different with its own challenges. And every year there are team members that are winning their first national championship. I am thankful for the support of our amazing Athletic Director and for the opportunity to represent the University of Louisville."
U of L was runnerup in Division 1A Large Coed and the Ladybirds were second in the Division 1A Dance category. The Ladybirds were edged after winning 12 consecutive titles.
The Spirit Groups prepare all year for that two minute and 30 second performance, which is nationally televised. U of L is coached by head coach and spirit coordinator Todd Sharp along with Sheryl Knight, Misty Hodges and James Speed. In all, the spirit Teams have morethan 40 national titles.
Selected members of the Spirit members will be heading back to Florida this upcoming weekend to compete with Team USA in the World Championship in Orlando, Florida at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex.
Looking forward, tryouts will be held May 81-10 in Louisville with more details to follow.
