The University of Louisville swimming and diving team open the home schedule against Xavier Friday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. in the Ralph Wright Natatorium.
U of L swimmers and divers will be showing support for breast cancer awareness with pink caps as a salute to their family and friends who have been affected by breast cancer.
Xavier University heads to Louisville on Friday evening with a meet already under their belt. The Musketeers competed in the Butler Fall Invitational on Sept. 29 in Indianapolis, Ind., against the host Bulldogs, as well as Saint Louis and Wright State. XU men fell to Saint Louis 103-116 and to Wright State 88-145. The women prevailed over Butler 141-45, but went down to Saint Louis 91-109 and lost a close one to Wright State, 102-108. Butler does not have a men's team.
Xavier's men's winners were freshmen Nick Strader in the 1000-free in a time of 9:56.72 and Rodrigo Suriano in the 100-free in 47.62. Senior Chad Thompson also had a victory in the 200-free with a time of 1:54.60. The 400-free relay team of Suriano, Armando Moss, Luke Johanns, and Eric Dirvin won in 3:08.28. The women's winners were sophomores Mackenna Rife in the 1000-free with a time of 10:51.17 and Claire Brolsma with a time of 25.17 in the 50-free. Junior Carolyn Stewart won the 200-back in a time of 2:09.50.
The men finished third in the A-10 Conference swimming and diving championships last season, while the women ended up tenth. XU will try to see how they fare as the school just joined the BIG EAST this past summer on July 1 as conference realignment continues.
On a different note, redshirt junior Armando Moss represented his home country, Bahamas, in the World University Games this summer in Russia. Also, the Xavier swimming team has four native Louisvillians on their team. Senior John Kinney (Trinity), juniors Maddie Day (Sacred Heart) and Carolyn Stewart (Assumption), and sophomore Kristen Liebert (Sacred Heart) will compete in their hometown this Friday at 5pm in Ralph Wright Natatorium. XU does not have diving.
