The University of Louisville men's tennis team swept the doubles point and then won four singles matches to beat visiting Clemson Saturday night at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. U of L raises its record to 5-4 while the Tigers drop to 1-3.
"Our message today before the match was we had a 31-match home winning streak broken on Thursday and today we start the new streak," said Rex Ecarma, U of L head coach. "I am really proud that we played so well against a talented ACC team which will compete very well nationally. Clemson has a classy coaching staff for whom I have a lot of respect."
The Cardinals swept the doubles point, with Amaury Derognat and Michael Lippens clinching the point with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Wes Moran and Dominique Maden. At No. 2, Andrew Carter and Albert Wagner upended Tigers Gerardo Meza and Cedric Willems 8-4. Last to finish was the hotly contested No. 1 spot where Robert Hall and Seb Stiefelmeyer edged Yannick Maden and Zachary Rigsby of Clemson 9-8.
"I thought Amaury Derognat competed very well in doubles and Luis Elizondo coming off the bench in singles did well also," said Ecarma. "It is good to see different names contribute to the team's success. We finally played doubles up to our potential and I hope that carries over to the next match."
Newcomer Luis Elizondo, a last minute insertion into the No. 6 slot, rolled easily with a 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Albert Wagner took his match next with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4. Clemson scored its first point at No. 1 when Yannick Maden edged Andrew Carter 6-0, 6-3. Michael Lippens clinched the match for the Cardinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Dominique Maden. Chris Simich scored U of L's other point with a marathon three-set win over Zac Rigsby 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
"If I had to choose an MVP of the match it would have to be Albert Wagner for his play at No. 4," said Ecarma.
The Cardinals are idle until Feb. 18 when they play Belmont at 11 a.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
