The No. 27 University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to host No. 7 University of Southern California 5-2 Saturday. The Cards (9-7) got victories from juniors Andrew Carter and Robert Hall.
"It is disappointing to see us not capitalize on leads yet again," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "Viktor was in total control of the first set with a 4-1 lead and lost it. He then won the second set, which should have been the final set. Alejandro Calligari was two points away from winning his second set, but lost in a tiebreaker."
The Trojans notched the first point of the match sweeping the doubles point. The tandem of Austen Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk fell to Southern California's Jaak Poldma and JT Sundling 8-4 at the top seed. Alejandro Calligari and Simon Childs battled Emilio Gomez and Daniel Nguyen to an 8-7 (5) decision at No. 3. The duo of Adam Donaldson and Robert Hall fell to the Trojans' Michael Grant and Steve Johnson 8-3 on court two to complete the sweep.
In singles, top-ranked Steve Johnson beat No. 12 Austen Childs 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. Gomez defeated Calligari 6-2, 7-6 at the two-spot. Nguyen clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Simon Childs at No. 3. Hall put the Cards on the scoreboard at the No. 6 position by beating Grant 6-0, 7-5. Andrew Carter made the score 4-2 with his 7-6, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) win over Sundling. No. 44 Jaak Poldma outlasted Maksimcuk 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) to close out the 5-2 win for USC.
"We were up against a very accomplished tennis program in USC," said Ecarma. "They are the two-time defending NCAA champion and a program with 18 national titles. To be at their level, we have to be mentally tougher."
