The U of L Swimming and Diving team will play host to the Tennessee Volunteers on Thursday, October 27, 2011. The meet will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium. Diving will begin at 1 p.m.
Both the Louisville men's and women's teams are 1-0 after their lone dual with Xavier earlier in the season. The women also competed in the SMU Classic this past week and put up a strong showing against highly ranked competition with a fourth place finish.
Last season U of L pulled the upset against the Volunteers by winning eight events, highlighted by Carlos Almeida's three wins.
The Cards come into the match looking to use it as a measuring stick of success for this year's team. Junior Hannah Gadd is the top diver for the Cards and took top honors in the 3-meter at the SMU Classic last week and was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week. The men's team is lead by senior Carlos Almeida and sophomore Joao De Lucca. They are ready for the challenge since swimming in the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China this past July. Almeida set a new Portuguese national record in the 100-breast with a time of 1:02.13. Joao De Lucca anchored Brazil's 4x200 Relay at the games.
Tennessee hosted a dual meet against the Universities of Kentucky and Indiana last week. The Lady Vols swept both teams while the men pulled off a split, beating Kentucky and narrowly losing to Indiana. Freshman Molly Hannis earned SEC freshman of the week by winning three events at the meet and senior Ricky Henahan was named the SEC Swimmer of the Week for performances in the backstroke and relays.
